What is a Hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove a woman's uterus. There are several reasons why a woman may choose to have a hysterectomy:

Uterine fibroids that cause pain, bleeding, or other problems

Uterine prolapse, which is a sliding of the uterus from its normal position into the vaginal canal

Cancer of the uterus, cervix, or ovaries

Endometriosis

Abnormal vaginal bleeding

Chronic pelvic pain

Adenomyosis, or a thickening of the uterus

Hysterectomy for noncancerous reasons is usually considered only after all other treatment approaches have been tried without success.

Dr. Stefanie A. Schultis has been performing robotic surgery for more than 15 years.  She believes whole-heartedly in the daVinci® Surgical System. The system was approved by the FDA in 2000. The technique has been rapidly adopted by hospitals in the US and Europe for use in a wide range of conditions including hysterectomies.

da Vinci® Single-Site® Surgery

One of the most important steps you can take before your hysterectomy is to educate yourself on the different types of surgeries available. Today, there are more options for how your uterus is removed than ever before.

The daVinci® Surgical System is the most widely used clinical robotic surgical system includes a camera arm and mechanical arms with surgical instruments attached to them. Dr. Schultis controls the arms while seated at a computer console near the operating table. The console gives a high-definition, magnified, 3-D view of the surgical site.

Know Your Hysterectomy Options

The most common surgical options are: traditional laparoscopy, da Vinci Surgery and open surgery.

Robotic Assisted Gynecologic Procedures

Robotic assisted surgery helps women get the relief they need with less pain and shorter recovery times.

  • Hysterectomy

  • Pelvic Organ Prolapse

  • Myomectomy

  • Endometriosis Resection

Less Invasive
More Precise
Faster Recovery

What is Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS)?

MIS is surgery typically performed through small incisions or operating ports, rather than large incisions, results in potentially shorter recovery times, fewer complications, reduced hospitalization costs and reduced trauma to the patients.

What are the benefits of da Vinci Surgery compared with traditional methods of surgery?

Some of the major benefits experienced by surgeons using the da Vinci Surgical System over traditional approaches have been greater surgical precision, increased range of motion, improved dexterity, enhanced visualization and improved access.  da Vinci Surgical System offers many potential benefits to patients facing surgery.  To learn more about the benefits of specific da Vinci procedures, go to www.davincisurgery.com.

Has the da Vinci Surgical System been cleared by the FDA?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared the da Vinci Surgical System for a wide range of procedures.

Why is it called the da Vinci Surgical System?

The product is called "da Vinci" in part because Leonardo da Vinci invented the first robot. He also used unparalleled anatomical accuracy and three-dimensional details to bring his masterpieces to life.  The da Vinci Surgical System similarly provides physicians with such enhanced detail and precision that the System can simulate an open surgical environment while allowing operation through tiny incisions.
